From natural meadows to hay art!

Kristīne Zihmane-Rītiņa is a creative artist and a passionate user of natural materials. Together with her family she manages  the natural grasslands in Virbi parish, Talsi municipality. The natural diversity and rhythm of that environment is a source of inspiration for her and her husband Juris Rītiņš, for their artistic work and creativity.

In 2010 Kristīne and her family founded the Straw Museum in Tukums. It is the only museum of its kind in Latvia, with more than 500 exhibits, including thematic collections of gnomes, dragons, birds, witches, mushrooms, exotic animals and large sculptures such as the 3 m high "Cat in Boots" and the 2.3 m "Mushroom Mummy".

Most of the used material is the hay from natural meadows managed by Kristīne's own family, which allows for both high quality and a sustainable approach to creating art.

 The Straw Museum is not only a place to see - it is also a place to experience the creative process for yourself. Visitors can take part in workshops. Everyone - big and small - can learn to make the hay and straw decorations. There are also workshops on site - a great opportunity to add a creative touch to your events and celebrations!

Kristīne and Juris have jointly developed several technical solutions for the production of sculptures and puppets, some of which have been patented by the Patent Board of the Republic of Latvia. These solutions demonstrate not only their technical ingenuity, but also their ability to develop traditional crafts in a new and contemporary form.

The Straw Museum is a place where natural materials are transformed into art works thus creating a unique experience for every visitor. It is an opportunity not only to discover the aesthetics of traditional handicrafts, but also to learn more about the value and biodiversity of natural meadows.

 Straw museum-workshop is located in the centre of Tukums, a 2-3 minute walk from the Tukums Ice Hall or the RIMI store and a 10-minute walk from the Tukums bus station or the Tukums 1 railway station.
