Taste of the Meadows Day in Sita and Pededze meadows

On July 6, the Latvian Fund for Nature and nature farmer Jurijs Prokofjevs invited to the second Taste of the Meadows Day in the Sita and Pededze floodplain. Together with the farmer and nature experts, we walked through the farmer's meadows and got acquainted with their natural values. We also learnt how to manage the wetlands, which this year have been named Habitat of the Year by the Latvian Fund for Nature.

Jurijs Prokofjevs' farm "Sita Nature Park" is located in the Sita and Pededze floodplain nature reserve. The Pededze River is very meandering and the nature reserve has extensive natural grasslands and a great diversity of natural grassland habitats, with many grassland birds nesting. After rainfall and during floods, the grasslands of the Sita and Pededze floodplains flood rapidly and form extensive flooded areas as the river flows through clayey soils with low water permeability. The floodplain therefore provides an important ecosystem service - water intake and purification, thus protecting the fields and fields beyond.
