The Bendiku family rear dairy and meat sheep on their farm, as well as Latvian Blue cattle, thereby preserving the genetic resources of this breed, which is so rare in our country. Although historically the sheep was the first farm animal to be milked for its milk, dairy sheep are a rarity in Latvia, and many people today are surprised to learn that sheep can actually be milked! Sheep’s milk is sweeter than cow’s milk; its fat content is around 6%. Sheep’s milk does not have a strong smell or taste, and it can be consumed by people who are intolerant to cow’s milk. The farm has its own processing facility, and the produce is marketed under the brand name “Bendiku piena aitas”. The range of products on offer includes additive-free yoghurt, kefir, feta cheese, halloumi (or frying cheese) and ice cream in various flavours – blackcurrant, rhubarb, mango and strawberry. Production of products made from the milk of Latvian Blue Cows has also begun. Those interested can book a visit to the farm to see the animals and sample the produce.
