Anna and Arnis Ginteri (SIA StarSpace) run a farm in Suntaži Parish, Ogre Municipality, where they breed Latvian dark-headed sheep. They differ from the most common imported meat sheep breeds of today in their hardiness and resilience. The family’s aim is to breed and offer for sale high-quality breeding stock and lamb meat, whilst at the same time restoring and conserving natural resources and biodiversity. Sheep consume up to five hundred different plants as part of their diet, selecting at any given moment those most necessary for their health; therefore, natural pastures are the best place for them to graze.
Latvian dark-headed sheep must be hornless, with a dark head and legs; there must be no black hairs in the fleece itself. So what if a black sheep happens to appear? Theoretically, it is a reject, however, on the ‘Starry Sheep’ farm, such interesting and rare specimens are kept both as display animals and for supplying wool to craftspeople, as there is no need to dye it – it is naturally black.
Visitors are also invited to explore the natural meadows and their biodiversity. And believe it or not – there’s also StarSpace an observatory for stargazing, where, during your visit, you can listen to a talk on stars, planets and other topics, presented in simple language.
