In the Abava Valley, just before Sabile, the picturesque terraced slopes catch the eye of many a passer-by, whilst on the other side of the road, a keen observer may spot vineyards. This is the “Drubazas” farm. Since the late 1990s, the site has been developed as a destination for tourism and nature exploration, whilst also growing grapes and producing wine. Recently, the farm has also begun producing and selling beef from cattle reared on natural meadows.
“The Dzērve family have been running the ”Drubazu“ farm for many years. Ģirts Dzērve knows the farm’s grounds intimately, both in terms of space and history. He will show you where the manor roads once ran across his land, and where an ancient burial site was found – which he himself refers to as a ”witch’s grave’. “Drubazas” boasts a great variety of habitats, including unique meadows that have never been mown since the days of the manor – it is no wonder that naturalists are brought here on excursions.
A botanical nature trail has also been created here, allowing visitors to discover the diversity of the natural meadows and learn about the indicator plant species growing there. Galoveja cattle, a breed developed in Scotland, graze in the natural meadows of the Abava Valley; they are well-suited to outdoor rearing and are excellent at maintaining the meadow habitat. They also enable the farmer to produce high-quality beef
The owners of Drubazi offer visitors the chance to taste and purchase their own home-made wine, as well as places to relax and stay overnight near the natural meadows. You can also buy beef reared in the natural meadows right there in Drubazi.
